MODERNIZATION OF TARAPOREVALA AQUARIUM IN MUMBAI
Taraporevala Aquarium, a 2nd generation aquarium, operated and maintained by Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Maharashtra, is one of the oldest aquariums in India. It was christened after Mr. Vicaji D. B. Taraporevala, who donated Rs. 2 Lakhs for the development of this aquarium. The then Chief Minister of Bombay, Shri. B. G. Kher laid the foundation stone on May 9, 1947. Built at a cost of Rs. 8.91 Lakhs, the aquarium was inaugurated and opened for public by Dr Rajendra Prasad on May 27, 1951.

The aquarium is built on the revenue plot No. 1/474, which is a prime location with a spectacular view of the Arabian Sea on famous "Queen's Necklace" route of Marine Drive in Mumbai. Total plot area is 4369.05 sq. mts; at the ruling Floor Space Index (FSI) of 1.33, only 51 % of the available FSI has been utilized.
